The weather was great today, but most groups reported that birding was a bit slow. Despite this, the Toledo count registered a very respectable 95 species. The most unexpected bird on the list was a very cooperative Northern waterthrush that I discovered in a marshy area just across the Michigan line along Algonquin Street, a couple hundred yards east of Summit Street. This is a first-ever record for the Toledo CBC. Other good birds included a couple of White-winged scoters (Cullen Park and Maumee Bay State Park), Northern saw-whet owl, Eastern phoebe, three Marsh wrens, two Gray catbirds, American pipit, and two Purple finches.
Thanks a bunch to all who participated.

Thanks for organizing Matt. It is always a good day to be out in the field.

Hello all I am new to Ohio. While walking my bird dog....well, Sure looked like she was pointing two sandhill cranes. I know...impossible. Yes, we also saw a GB Heron, and I know the difference. We never got closer than 75 yds and I had no binocs or camera. I am not trying to confirm, just curious to know if anybody thinks, from experience, that this might be possible. They were in appropriate habitat and I would not disclose the location on public forum. I pulled my dog off point after two flushes and decided further following would be harassing.
Replies would be welcome.

Not impossible at all. Even within the last 5 years there has been a noticeable difference with regards to sandhill crane sightings. I don’t recall if any groups had them on the Toledo Count this year, but in my view, they’re almost expected to be seen by somebody on a local Christmas Count.

Welcome Wrohn. Cranes and Great Blue Herons would be a possibility. Just this past weekend I had 4 cranes at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and also a couple of Great Blue Herons. In the past I have even seen GBH in January at Orleans park in Perrysburg. There was one listed on this years Rudolph CBC. I haven't seen the Toledo CBC list but would bet both were on it.
