A male Golden-crowned Sparrow was found in Illinois yesterday so don't give up looking for Ohio's second record...

Oh gosh, seems I managed to stir the pot.  It was never my intention.  Charles, you are right I should have asked permission, however since it was a public forum I took it from, if I had linked to it the same info would have come up.  But, I should have asked permission.  Second of all, None of this was ever my intention, and I don't blame you for anything.  I never was mad at you or had any ill feelings at all.  This has gotten way out of hand and I think we should just end it before it gets worse. Talking on these message board you can read words, but you can never get a sense of peoples real diction.  I was never trying to start a fight, I just have heard of several people(not saying any more names) getting to see the bird, and it got me down.  I hope in the future birding doesn't end up being something where a person finds a rare bird, only tells his buddies and if you are not in the "clique" you don't get to see the birds.  Thats kind of how butterfliers work a lot of times.  I sincerely apologize though if I offended anyone, it was not my intention.  Lets just bury the hatchet and drop it as I think we are not getting our points across in the diction that they are truely being "spoken."  Sorry Again,
Troy

Eek, my post, I just re-read it and it came off way harsher than I meant. Again, I was trying to explain that no one had any hard feelings. I put that comment in a very blunt way, I am sorry. I wasn't talking about you, I was talking about future visitors, so that this sort of mis-understanding doesn't happen and no one gets their toes stepped on. I guess I put it in a way that stepped on toes, I'm sorry about that really, really I am. I have no hard feelings about it and I don't judge you for it. I was just explaining why its hard to hear about the sighting. Really, it was a blunt exaggeration to try and get a point across. No one I know, has hard feelings about anyone involved with the sighting. We understand. And no offense Charles, but when you post about your sightings in a public forum (even if it is another state's) those public posts might be noticed by the public. But its ok! There will always be birds we can't see, there will always be birds that someone sees and we don't. Again, I'm sorry about the misunderstanding. My blunt statement was not necessary and wasn't directed at anyone in particular. Please don't fear reporting your bird, as you can read in most of these forums we are friendly people and all that good stuff. Gahh, I feel bad. Wasn't my intention.

To the members of Rarebird,

First allow me to thank the members of this list who have sent me messages of support during this thread regarding the sparrow in Findlay.  There are members here that are certainly some of the best people in the birding community; it is you who are the strength of this list and again I thank you for your kind words.

I have tried to stay out of this discussion since it is my belief that forums such as this one should remain a pleasant place to report and discuss the birding world that we are all passionate about but since mine is the only name that has been dragged into this forum by others I feel I have the need as well as the right to respond.

I will attempt to keep this brief.  First, birding from a private residence is not my style; I prefer my sightings to be in natural areas and do not enjoy intruding on others in their homes not even on an open invitation.  A tick mark on a piece of paper is just not worth it to me and makes me feel uncomfortable.  I am a watercolorist and do go to homes when commissioned to photograph my subject matter whether it be children or pets; I went to Findlay on business as my Blog clearly stated.

As to Gentle Ben’s remarks about “don't rub it in that you got to see it and we didn't and there is no way that we can”  I would ask that he understand that I have posted nothing on any of the Ohio Lists about seeing this bird.  A portion of my post to the Michigan Birders List regarding three species possibly blown in from the western states, which directed Michigan birders to my blog if they wished to read any details was copied from the Michigan list, and then without any permission pasted here.  I assume permission technically to do this is not required, but common courtesy would suggest asking permission first especially when publishing a person’s real name and personal e-mail address as part of the copy and paste.

I am hearing more often that people do not want to post their rare sightings on internet forums and I could never understand why, until now…and this, more than anything else saddens me.  There is already another bird in Michigan seen yesterday that many would race to see but the birder refuses to post anything about it.  I fear this may be the growing trend and I must admit that before I post another sighting. I will pause to consider if it is worth the ramifications and scrutiny of others.

With that said, it is springtime and migration has begun.  Let’s end this unpleasantness and get back to birding.

With kind regards,

Charles Owens

You can find my private e-mail address in troybird’s previous post.  If anyone feels the need to respond or has anything else that needs clarifying please do so privately to me.

Ben, I completely understand the problem. As I've stated before, if this bird was at my house I would welcome anyone who wanted to come and see it. But it's not and there isn't a thing I can do about it. If I never posted the bird and then people found out after the fact then we would of been accused of being secretive also, so I don't know what to say.

I really hope I get something really good in my yard this spring so people can come and see it and see I'm not such a bad guy. Wink

Hey guys, on behalf of Troy I can say he was trying to play nice, he just wondered (as I did too) if there was some way a compromise could be made and he could see the bird too. Its ok, really it is hard to deal with being the one shut out, just think how you would feel if you found out that only some people could do something but you couldn't? You'd think it was unfair. But its hard to see that when you have seen the bird yourself. I know, I've been there, on both sides. Troy wasn't trying to start a fight here, so don't worry about it. Maybe in the future people who are allowed to go see the bird could just keep it to themselves. In more blunt terms: We know its there, just don't rub it in that you got to see it and we didn't and there is no way that we can. And Kridershawk, you did a fine thing letting us know, its not your fault and no one blames you. Honestly I know its hard to tell, but I don't think anyone of us who hasn't seen the bird and been asking about it is really that upset, its just hard to tell the tone when reading text like in this forum. People are just trying to work a deal here. We care, but we don't want to make anyone mad. Well at least I don't. :)
