Calendar Event: Short eared owlsPosted: 11 February 2007 at 6:04pm |
|
This evening around 5:30 PM a group of about 12 short eared owls were located South of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. They were feeding in the fields East of Lickert Harder Road. Their exact location was about 1.5 miles South of the Refuge and just North of the first set of railroad tracks.

Purely accidental. I live in Oak Harbor and often use Lickert Harder Road as an exit from Ottawa National. Today it really paid off.

Glad you found the rare bird alert web page and located the sighting. We wish you were home too. See you in a couple of weeks.

I think I'm going to head out that way tomorrow morning, after I get off of work, to try my luck. Thanks for the alert, very much!

If you went out this morning I imagine the weather was against a probable sighting of the owls. Did you go? Were you successful in finding the birds?

No... I chickened out as it was pretty nasty when I got off of work.
My brother lives out that way and he called me as he was heading home,
telling me that the roads were pretty bad with the wind and snow.
I wonder/hope if they will stay in the area with this weather? Work called
me to tell me to stay home today. My luck, they are hunkered down, waiting
out the weather, in spectacular viewing range! Hah. Oh well, maybe I'll
get lucky once this weather clears a bit. I so much want to see one or more
of them. I've only seen a Short Eared once... but it was a captive bird at
the rehab center in Castalia. I'd sure love to see one in better circumstances,
they're just a beautiful owl!
I'll update on the board, if I get to head out and look, and if I'm successful.

You made a wise decision staying out of this area early in the morning. I was on the road by 6:45 AM today and the North South roads were really bad. Good chance the owls will, as you say, "hunker down" for a couple of days. If so there should be outstanding viewing again soon.

Is there a way someone could post one of the maps (either satelite or road imagery) of the place where the owls are? We're hoping to drive out when the weather clears, but that neck of the woods is a bit unfamiliar to us.
Thanks. |
