It was very skittish in the wet grasses bordering a small pond and I really struggled to get good looks, much less good photos. Perhaps those with more experience might be able to gleam an ID from these blurry, less than ideal angle photos.
On another note, a friend an I are heading to Kitty Todd tomorrow afternoon. We have never been to the area and would welcome any advice on where to best hike for butterflies at this time. It appears there are different properties within the preserve. Do you park in the same spot for all the areas?
Thanks,
KM

Author: Sherrie
Subject: Least Tern @ Maumee Bay SP
Posted: 17 May 2012 at 12:22pm

The Least Tern was being seen from 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. when I left. Several Cleveland, Columbus, and Michigan birders were able to see him this morning. I'm looking forward to seeing Brian Zwiebel's shot of the bird!

The bird is very skittish and well camouflaged with the sand, zebra mussel shells, and debris on the lake beach. He has been hanging out at the last two or three inlets toward the east end near the lodge by himself. He occasionally will pick up and fly west working his way back east to the same general area. It is difficult to see him with the naked eye. He is the same size as a Killdeer or a little smaller and it is hard to find him when he is hunkered down along the beach. He may flush before you see him. Best bet is to walk along the paved path behind the auditorium hill and work your way north toward the beach slowly, scanning the area as you go. Unless of course, you see a bunch of people standing there with their scopes on him like we were this morning.

Edited by Sherrie - Yesterday at 12:24pm
