A Chuck-will's widow was discovered at Oak Openings Preserve Metropark on May 15 by Jay Wright and was subsequently heard on both May 16 and 17 as has been reported on eBird. I found that the bird was still present early this morning. It's both extraordinary and significant that this rarity has persisted in the same spot for at least five days now in what seems to be very attractive habitat.

Please be aware that it is calling in a section of Oak Openings Preserve that is likely too far from any road to hear, so access to the bird during nighttime hours is a bit of an issue. I would request that if you go looking for this bird...PLEASE DO NOT CHASE AFTER IT OR HARASS IT IN ANY WAY.

I'm hopeful that this could be a bird that remains during the breeding season. In any case, as best I know this is the first record of Chuck-will's widow for the park and the Oak Openings Region.

The Chuck-will's-widow remains at Oak Openings Preserve Metropark as of this morning. So do the mosquitos.

The Chuck-Will's-widow was calling again this morning, so it's been in the same location for more than a month now. Does it have a mate? We'll probably never know, but it's fidelity to this site is certainly of interest.
